Correspondingly, our Human Pharmaceuticals business has developed very dynamically in 2006. The successful growth reinforces the patient-orientated approach of continuing intensive research into diseases and the development of new drugs and therapies that represent major therapeutic advances for patients.

Boehringer Ingelheim has been at the forefront of research and development in the cardiovascular disease area for decades, establishing its market presence in the treatment of thromboembolic diseases as well as hypertension and consequential diseases. Our research programmes benefit from close interaction with research scientists in our other drug discovery units. Targeting related human diseases, such as metabolic and immunological/ inflammatory disorders, will undoubtedly increase the opportunities for developing novel, innovative therapeutic agents in the fight against cardiovascular disease. Main products from Boehringer Ingelheim for stroke therapy and prevention include Actilyse ® (alteplase), the only approved therapy for thrombolytic treatment in acute ischaemic stroke, and Aggrenox®, Asasantin®Retard (dipyridamole/ASA, which is indicated to reduce the risk of stroke in patients who have had transient ischaemia of the brain or completed ischaemic stroke due to thrombosis.
