A.I. Virtanen Insitute at Kuopio Kuopio University is a National Center of Excellence and a

member of Nordic Center of Excellence in Neurodegenration. The percentage of extramural
funding in Kuopio University is among the highest among Finnish Universties. The Insitute
also hold a status of Center of Excellence in teaching. Kuopio has carried out the first
Nordic clinical trials on gene therapy. More than 5 successful spin off biocompanies have
been established durin the last 7 years by the institute, one of them, Ark Therpaeutics,
is the world leader in gene therapy. Professor Jari Koistinaho is Dean of the Insitute,
Head of the Kuopio Biocenter, and a board member of Biocenter Finland and the Nordic
Center of Exellence in Neurodegeneration. He has published over 150 original articles on
neurodegeneration in international scientific journals. His group made the original finding
on neuroprotective effect of minocycline which has triggered several clinical trials in the US
and other countries. The institute has core facilities for non-invasive imaging (MRI and
SPECT/CT), modern behavioural research unit, GLP laboratories for various constructs and
viruses for gene therapy, gene array and proteomics units. Together with Kuopio University
Hospital the researcher carry out clinical trials on stroke and other brain diseases.

Role in Project

The Kuopio team contributes to the project by investigating the role of aging, apoliprotein
E isoforms and different co-morbidities in stroke models, identifying novel inflammatory
targets in stroke, identifying novel neuroprotective antibiotics and their derivatives, and by
developing novel mouse models and their non-invasive imaging for the project. In addition,
Kuopio coordinates the training WP (WP9).
