The institution ’IDIBAPS’ has the fundamental objective to integrate quality clinical research and high level basic research for a more effective transfer of scientific breakthroughs in the prevention and treatment of the most common health problems in Spain. According to the viewpoint our Institution, our team is integrated by basic and clinical researchers with a long experience in stroke research. Dr. Anna Planas is a research scientist leading the stroke research team at IDIBAPS. Her team incorporates stroke clinicians led by the head of the Stroke Unit of the Hospital, Dr. Angel Chamorro, an international expert in the field of clinical stroke research. In the recent years they made significant contributions from clinical studies supporting that stroke induces immunodepression. A clinical immunologist, Dr. Francisco Lozano, collaborates in this project and his expertise will be most valuable. They will carry out basic and clinical stroke research and to work at the interface of these two fields with a clear translational orientation. A main contribution of the Barcelona team to this consortium will be in the area of brain imaging. Dr. Planas has been involved in in vivo imaging studies in animals using different imaging modalities, and now she is in charge of developing a research program with a new animal dedicated MRI system. She currently participates in a 'European Network of Excellence’ named Diagnostic Molecular Imaging (DiMI)

Role in Project

Imaging WP8 is led by IDIBAPS. This WP is a platform for in vivo imaging studies. We will coordinate the imaging work within the consortium and promote investigation using in vivo imaging techniques. We also participate in WP1, WP2, WP3, WP5, and WP7. We will contribute to WP1 with studies of reperfusion after brain ischemia, and the use of new thombolytics. Our contribution to WP2 will be on searching inflammatory targets for protection. We will participate in WP3 to investigate molecular players involved in the immune response induced by stroke, and in WP5 to study the effect of hyperglycemia on protein glycosylation processes. In the context of WP7, the animal model platform, we will share our models and agree with other partners on particular models and studies to be developed to improve experimental approaches to model stroke in the laboratory setting.
