QuickCool AB Quickcool AB is a company, recently founded 2003, and located at the IDEON Science Park in Lund Sweden (3 employees). Quickcool AB is a leader in the development of medical devices for selective brain cooling. Two unique methods for induction of brain hypothermia have been patented. Both take advantage of the heat exchange system at the base of the brain where blood in the internal carotid artery exchanges heat with venous blood in the sinus cavernous. The venous blood in sinus cavernous is either cooled by retroperfusion of cold blood into the jugular vein on one side, or by nasopharyngeal cooling. Due to the non-invasive nasopharyngeal technology the development is presently focused on this technology. Data submitted for publication demonstrate that two balloons positioned in either nasal cavity and perfused with 15 degree saline cools a pig brain by 4 degrees within 10 minutes. Exploratory studies have demonstrated that the balloons a tolerated by humans and that cooling the human brain is possible.
Role in ProjectThe main focus for QuickCool is to collaborate within the team in the implementation of nasopharyngeal cooling in a clinical setting. QuickCool will investigate the safety and feasibility of nasopharyngeal head cooling in healthy volunteers and stroke patients. Project Leader
