Sygnis Bioscience AG (formerly Axaron Bioscience AG and LION bioscience AG) in Heidelberg is an SME (40 employees) committed to developing novel therapies for stroke and neurodegenerative disorders. Sygnis has been active in the field for many years, and has a number of pre-clinical drug candidates, one of which is currently undergoing phase II testing in acute ischaemic stroke (AXIS). Sygnis has extensive experience in different ischaemic models, transcription profiling in the brain, plasticity mechanisms in the brain, and in vitro assays of cell death. Sygnis is well interlinked with the scientific community, and is supported by both a scientific as well as a clinical advisory board. In 2005, Sygnis Bioscience AG received the Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation of the Year Award in the field of drugs for stroke therapy.
Dr. Armin Schneider is Vice President of Molecular Neurology at Sygnis. He will be heading the proposed project at Sygnis. He directs a research program aimed at finding new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases and stroke, and currently also oversees clinical development of compounds. Dr. Schneider combines insights into molecular mechanisms of disease with an understanding of clinical issues. He received his degree from the University of Heidelberg, and had clinical training in the U.S. and in the neurology department in Heidelberg. He has authored more than 40 publications in the area of molecular neurobiology, among these publications in Nature, Nature Medicine, PNAS, Neuron, Science or JCI. His work is funded by grants from the BMBF, the NGFN, and the MJFF.
Role in ProjectSygnis will study, in the context of the Neuroprotection team in ARISE, the interaction of the endogenous neuroprotectant G-CSF (Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor) and the lytic drug rt-PA (tissue plasminogen activator). We will employ biochemical, cell culture, and animal models. The outcome of these experiments has immediate impact on clinical trials of G-CSF in acute ischemic stroke.
