Homepage

NsGene A/S is a Danish SME founded in December 1999 with 27 employees with a mission to
develop cell and gene based therapeutic products for the treatment of neurological disorders.
The research is headed by Dr. Lars U. Wahlberg, co-founder of NsGene and a board certified
neurosurgeon and researcher with several years experience within the fields of biomaterials,
neuroscience, and cell and gene therapy. The organisation has an experienced research staff
and the necessary facilities with capabilities ranging from cell and molecular biology to clinical
trials. NsGene has discovered and patented several new growth factors with relevance to
the treatment of neurological disorders, including stroke. Neublastin, one of the lead
proteins from this effort is under development as a therapeutic for neuropathic pain in a license
and collaboration agreement with Biogen Idec, one of the larges biopharmaceutical companies
in the world. The neublastin is in late-stage preclinical development and is anticipated to enter
clinical trials in the near future. In a second product arm, the company has developed an advanced
therapeutic, which is based on an implantable device housing a genetically modified cell line
capable of secreting potent therapeutic proteins within the central nervous system for a long
duration. This regenerative product platform is entering clinical trials in 2007 for the treatment of the
cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease and another product based on the same technology is under
development for Parkinson’s disease in a Michael J. fox Foundation sponsored effort.

Role in project

NsGene A/S is an SME partner committed to develop biological therapies for the treatment of
neurological disorders, including stroke. In the project, the role of Meteorin, a new growth factor
patented by the Company, is being investigated for the treatment of stroke. In addition, the
Company’s proprietary encapsulated cell biodelivery platform will be explored in the delivery of
potent growth factors to the stroke-damaged brain to provide a restorative therapeutic effect.
The NsGene team will be collaborating with several members of the consortium.
