The Saarland University in the western part of Germany close to the French border will contribute to WP6 Preventing stroke via the neurovasuclar unit. The department of Medicine has a longstanding focus on the study of endothelial function, atherogenesis and stroke. Important contributions for the projects are animal models of vascular disease and the quantitative in vivo study of endothelial function, angiogenesis, endothelial injury and cardiovascular physiology. The well-equipped laboratory has documented experience with mouse models of food supplementations, physical exercise and pharmacologic treatments. The animal models are complemented by cell culture of all major cardiovascular cell types. Special knowledge includes the molecular biology of free oxygen radicals, the nitric oxide system and small G-protein signalling. In addition, the group has developed a particular interest in the study of the number and function of endothelial progenitor cells in vitro, in animal models and in human studies. In addition to the basic science, Ulrich Laufs (head of the research lab, head of lipid clinic, chairman of the joint working group "Heart and Brain" of the German Cardiac Society and the German Society of Neurology) and Michael Böhm (president-elect of the German Society of Cardiology) bring to the project extensive clinical experience in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases and have initiated and performed numerous clinical trials in the area of cardiovascular prevention.
